Get to know Youth MP Ruby Bridge

Youth Press Gallery member Emma West features Youth MP Ruby Bridge, “a talented leader who will undoubtedly bring great change during her tenure”

story-5

I recently sat down with Youth MP Ruby Bridge where I had the opportunity to learn about the impressive work she has already begun just one month into her tenure as a member of Youth Parliament. Subjects of conversation varied, ranging from civics education to feminism where Ruby’s social awareness and intellect shone through.

When asked why she wanted to be a part of Youth Parliament, Ruby seemed stumped, not because she couldn’t think of any reasons but because there were too many. She soon decided that it was her passion for engaging youth in politics. Also, the opportunity to partake in the political process stood as her reasoning for applying to be a Youth MP and represent Green Party Co Leader James Shaw. Ruby made clear her excitement for her tenure, emphasizing the chance it gives each Youth MP to make a real difference in their community. “Working collectively with other Youth MPs who are passionate about the same things as me and who are just as determined to bring change is definitely something I’m looking forward to.”

Rolling up her sleeves for youth engagement

Ruby has already begun planning tenure alongside other Youth MPs in the wider Wellington region such as a workshop for young people to learn about civics. “We hope it will give youth an opportunity to become more aware of what it means to be an active citizen because it is just so important, especially in terms of improving youth participation rates, in say elections.” Ruby also divulged her passion for activism, noting that just last week she was a part of ‘pro-choice’ demonstrations at Wellington Hospital which were countering the rhetoric of ‘pro-life’ protesters that had been there earlier that week.

With a likeable personality and an unwavering determination for improving the way younger generations understand the system that governs them; Ruby Bridge is a talented leader from Wellington, who will undoubtedly bring great change during her tenure as a Youth MP.
