Te Kete Aronui Suite of Resources

The Ministry of Youth Development (MYD) – Te ManatÅ« Whakahiato Taiohi embarked on a journey to reset the Expanding Youth Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education work programme in 2019/2020.

The first step in this journey was to get a shared understanding about what ‘good’ looks like for youth enterprise (YE) programmes and the YE sector. In August 2021, various products were developed in partnership with The Prince’s Trust New Zealand (PTNZ), which included Te Kete Aronui (TKA) and an Eco-system Map. Entrepreneurship programmes potentially offer a significant contribution to building a more hopeful, prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future for Aotearoa New Zealand.

Three Key Pou

Te Kete Aronui is a YE outcomes framework which outlines three key pou (themes):

  • Efficacy – to develop Entrepreneurial Capital
  • Economy – to create pathways to participate in the economy
  • Equity – respond to inequality and meet diverse needs.

Three questions were asked to produce three themes to understand what ‘good’ looks like in youth entrepreneurship initiatives. The three key pou (themes) were the outcome of three questions.

 These questions are:

  • How can we measure what ‘good’ looks like in terms of youth entrepreneurship experiences and programming? To answer this a variety of viewpoints were collected centering around young people’s experiences resulting in the theme of ‘efficacy’.
  • What is the state of youth entrepreneurship right now in Aotearoa, and what can we learn from evidence and data from here and overseas about this? The theme of ‘economy’ was raised from within this question.
  • The third-party questions how these insights can be used strategically to create systems levels change for young people resulting in the third theme being ‘equity’.

Suite of Resources

PTNZ has worked to develop four resources designed to support providers with building the entrepreneurial capital (skills and thinking) of young people through high quality programmes. These include:

  • Ecosystem Mapping
  • Efficacy, Economy and Equity Resources
  • Impact Measurement Framework
  • Case Studies – six case studies (videos and written) have been developed to tell the stories of young people’s experiences of YE programmes in their own words.
