Youth Week 2019 Wrap-up

27 May 2019

Ara Taiohi invited Aotearoa New Zealand to celebrate their 9th annual Youth Week campaign which was held from 18–26 May 2019.

The theme chosen by young people this year was: "We Are More Than You See - He wai hōhonu mātou" (literally, we are deep waters, thus referring to unseen depths). The current focus on child and youth wellbeing created the opportunity to whakamana the young people of Aotearoa.

Youth organisations and young people across the country collaborated and ran events to reflect the 2019 theme. Many of the events this year took a co-design approach and culminated in public performance events across Aotearoa.

Thanks to funding from the Ministry of Youth Development and other local funders, the range of Youth Week events were really diverse! Ara Taiohi has an events map on their website which promoted and displayed these wonderful events. Jane Zintl, Ara Taiohi’s CEO says, “Ara Taiohi’s Youth Week is the highlight of our calendar year. Young people and people who work with young people run community events across the nation that celebrate our young people. Youth Week is an essential part of the ecosystem of youth development that works together to support young people in Aotearoa to thrive.”
