The Great West Coast Trolley Derby
The Great West Coast Trolley Derby, a tradition that nearly died, was revived with a bang on Sunday 16 September thanks to the support of Ministry of Youth Development’s Youth Development Partnership funding.
Over 30 trolleys turned up on the day and after rigorous scrutiny by
volunteers from the Heritage Machinery Park, 48 drivers in various age
grades raced down Hokitika’s Airport Drive.
Ministry of Youth Development funding supported the Teen Team section.
Teams of teens registered weeks before and were linked with a mentor to
develop work skills through cart building.
Twelve carts raced in this category with over forty teenagers involved in construction.
Schools and Private Tertiary Educators took the opportunity to use trolley building as a focus for skill development.
One proud youngster explained that the welding on his cart was all his own and that he had only learnt to weld last week.
An unanticipated spin off saw the fathers who had attend
the Nurturing the Future sessions reporting on how beneficial the
project was on their relationship with their kids. WestREAP, in
partnership with the Westland District Council, hope to grow this event
into an annual fixture.
