If you are between the ages of 12-24 you may be able to participate in one of the Ministry’s programmes or services. They offer you a chance to get practical work and life skills to help you in finding employment.

All of our programmes are fun and include work experience, community projects, recreation activities and educational skills. They will also give you a better understanding of your local community and environment.

Outdoor activities are a big component of our programmes and will give you the opportunity to take part in a range of activities such as abseiling, canoeing, caving, kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, tramping/camping and team sports.

Other skills you will learn include practical trade skills, first aid, driver licence, computer skills, writing and basic maths and how to prepare a curriculum vitae.

You will receive a certificate of achievement from the Ministry of Youth Development, and most programmes offer New Zealand Qualifications Authority unit standards and The Young New Zealanders’ Challenge (Bronze Award).

Click on the links below to see the programmes and services operating in your area. If you are interested in enrolling in any of these, all you need to do is contact the individual organisations that run them.

The Ministry also funds local councils to run projects for young people. Click here to see if your local council has a project that you can be involved in.
