Employment
Young people tend to be disproportionately affected when economic activity declines.
Extra employment support for young people
On 24 November 2009 a further 2,000 places were confirmed on the Job Ops scheme by the Social Development and Employment Minister Paula Bennett.
Job Ops creates work opportunities for young people with low or no skills who are trying to get into a tight labour market.
Unemployment rates
The Department of Labour's Household Labour Force Survey (June 2010) showed a slight increase in the number of young people who are unemployed. 38,000 in the 15 - 19 age group (24.7% of the workforce in this age group) reported being out of work. This is around 2000 fewer than in March 2010. In the 20 - 24 age group, 30,000 reported being unemployed in June 2010, compared with 26,000 in March 2010. This represents 14% of the workforce in this age group.
