The Adult Rights and Responsibilities (Age of Majority) Bill 2010
The Adult Rights and Responsibilities (Age of Majority) Bill 2010 proposes three important measures to begin to address the confusing and often conflicting age thresholds in current legislation and policy. The Bill will:
- move the default age of attaining adulthood (the age of majority) from 20 to 18 years old.
- remove the current ability for under 16 year olds to be discriminated against on the basis of age in certain circumstances (within the Human Rights Act 1993).
- set up a process for biennial Ministerial review of age of majority-related issues by the Ministers of Justice and Youth Affairs.
This Bill was passed by Youth MPs.
