Youth Digital Enterprise Award - Frequently Asked Questions

 

What is the Youth Digital Enterprise Award?

Through Budget 2017, the Ministry of Youth Development (MYD) is administering $6 million over four years to fund Youth Enterprise Initiatives. This funding is targeted at expanding youth enterprise initiatives which support young people to learn and develop entrepreneurial knowledge, skills and competencies.

The Youth Digital Enterprise Award (the Award) is designed to provide scholarship funding to support young people who are developing and/or have an idea or concept for developing a smart and innovative enterprise project with a digital focus.

What is the aim of the Youth Digital Enterprise Award?

The Award aims to support young people increase their skills, knowledge, experience, networks and/or help them to engage more effectively with wider digital technology industry partners.

In a rapidly and constantly changing global environment, young people with entrepreneurial attitudes, behaviours and capabilities are more likely to succeed personally, academically and in business.

How much funding is available?

$110,000 is available each year for the four financial years 2017/2018 to 2020/2021.

Young people can seek scholarship funding up to a maximum value of $1,000 per applicant.

(MYD will consider applications from individuals and/or small groups).

What is the funding for?

The funding is to support young people, aged 12 to 18 years, who have developed and/or who are developing a smart and innovative enterprise project with a digital focus (have an idea/concept for a smart and innovative enterprise project with a digital focus), access opportunities which could help them get their project to the next level. Examples of things you could apply the Award towards include, but is not limited to:

  • attending a digital focused event and/or programme
  • undertaking market research to identify the demand for a digital product
  • receiving input from an industry expert
  • building and/or testing of a prototype digital product.

Can anyone apply to the Youth Digital Enterprise Award?

MYD is inviting young people, aged 12 to 18 years, to submit a brief Expression of Interest (EoI) from Monday 21 August, 12:00pm (midday) to Friday 15 September, 12:00pm (midday).

The EoI should briefly tell us about your digital enterprise project and how it fits with the Award aims and criteria. (see Youth Digital Enterprise Award - Criteria and application process for more information).

Successful EoI’s will be invited to present their initiative to a panel (either in person or by video) and say why it should receive scholarship funding (invited applicants will have a maximum of 3 minutes).

If an invited applicant would like to present their initiative in te reo Māori and/or New Zealand Sign Language please advise MYD as early as possible prior to the panel date.

Venue/s and date/s will be confirmed with successful applicants.

Successful Youth Digital Enterprise Award recipients will be advised from late-October 2017.

Is funding support available to attend the panel presentation?

No, MYD is not able to provide funding support to applicants invited to present their initiative to attend the panel meeting. MYD is seeking to host sessions in regions to make them more accessible and will accept presentations in the form of a video recording.

Can applicants submit more than one application?

No, MYD will only accept one application per applicant/s.

What types of initiatives are eligible for funding?

The Youth Digital Enterprise Award is directed towards enterprise projects with a digital focus, which make a positive difference to developing young people’s entrepreneurial knowledge, skills competencies and/or networks.

Can this funding be used to support an existing initiative?

Yes, ideally MYD is seeking new and/or innovative enterprise projects and/or enterprise ideas. However, if you already have an existing successful enterprise with a digital focus we will support you to access opportunities which help you expand into new and/or innovative areas.

How are funding decisions made?

MYD will be accepting EoI’s from young people from Monday 21 August, 12:00pm (midday) to Friday 15 September, 12:00pm (midday).

EoI’s will be reviewed and assessed against the Youth Digital Enterprise Award criteria:

  • Digital/Information Technology focus
  • innovation and potential enterprise viability
  • potential for social and/or environmental impact
  • value for money and learning impact.

MYD will invite successful applicants to present their initiative and say why it should receive scholarship funding to a panel.

The panel will confirm funding recommendations to be moderated and approved by MYD.

MYD reserves the right to award funding at a level, and for a period of its discretion.

MYD aims to confirm final Award recipients from late-October 2017.

 

Is there anything the Youth Digital Enterprise Award will not support?

Yes, the Youth Digital Enterprise Award will not support:

  • initiatives targeted at young people below the age of 12 years or over the age of 18 years
  • initiatives being delivered outside New Zealand
  • on-going costs, such as rent or salaries
  • subsidising costs or covering funding shortfalls for existing initiatives
  • youth enterprise/business initiatives which do not have a clear digital focus.
