Youth political participation - what's the issue?

Why are the young less likely to follow politics and vote? What are the trends nationally and internationally? How will this affect us? What can be done about it?

In the lead-up to the local body elections and the national elections in 2008,  we brought together three speakers on 19 March 2007 to bring their perspectives to this debate that goes to the core of citizenship:

  • Professor Jack Vowles, Professor of Political Studies, University of Auckland - on the research he has done on generational and life-cycle effects on voter turnout
  • Dr Helena Catt, Chief Executive, Electoral Commission - "Strategies for encouraging young active citizens" - thinking around ways to encourage youth to participate and be active citizens
  • Anthony Haas (Publisher, DecisionMaker Guide to Parliament and Government) - advocate of citizenship education for young people in New Zealand.
