Youth in Focus - Key Findings from Recent Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Young People

On 25 February 2008, the Ministry of Youth Development hosted a seminar by Chris Ryan and Anastasia Sartbayeva (Australian National University) - “Youth in Focus: Key Findings from Recent Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Young People”.

This presentation was an opportunity to view recently-collected data on Australian young people, with high relevance to the setting of youth policy in New Zealand. This seminar discussed recent findings relating to Australian youth drawn from a project that involves the combination of survey and administration data from the "Youth in Focus" research. This research is based on a rich dataset based on both survey responses and administration data. The focus of the presentation was on the education, employment and health outcomes of young Australians and how these differ between groups whose involvement with the income support system varied.

Dr Chris Ryan is the Director of the Social Policy Evaluation, Analysis and Research Centre at the Australian National University. He has had an extensive career in government and academia, particularly around labour market and education issues. His research career has focused on longitudinal surveys of Australian youth, and, most recently, on the role of literacy and numeracy in explaining the education, training and labour market outcomes of young Australians.

Dr Anastasia Sartbayeva is a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. Anastasia has been the Survey and Data Manager of the “Youth In Focus” project since May 2006.
