The health and wellbeing of young people

On 14 February 2008, The Ministry of Youth Development hosted a seminar on “The health and wellbeing of young people: challenging orthodoxies and setting new directions” by Richard Eckersley.

Richard Eckersley is a Fellow at the Australian National University's Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health in Canberra and a founding director of Australia 21, a non-profit, public-interest, research company.

Richard Eckersley's research explores progress and wellbeing, and includes measures of national progress; the relationships between economic growth, quality of life and sustainability; the social and cultural determinants of health and happiness; visions of the future; and young people and their world. He discussed the conflicting data on young people's health; asked whether economic growth is having a positive or negative impact on their wellbeing; and explored the gap between the kind of future young people say they would prefer to the one they actually expect.
