Strengths and risks: Practice, education, policy and working together for young people
Presented by Kim Jewel Elliott, Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer, Youth Studies and Youth Work, The University of Auckland
This presentation is in two parts; the role tertiary education can play in linking government strategy such as the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa (YDSA) with youth workers, and the broader setting of youth work practice.
The section on youth work involves a reflection on the tensions and opportunities inherent in enacting strengths based practice with young people amidst a broader setting of risk management.
Kim's interests are young people, health, sexuality and spirituality. She is completing her PhD on the connections between sexuality and spirituality in a school context and the notion of risk. Before her academic career Kim spent 16 years working with young people as a facilitator, mentor and educator for agencies like Youthline and the Auckland DHB.
