The White Ribbon campaign was started by a group of men in Canada in
1991 in response to the killing of 14 female students at Montreal
University. In 1999, the United Nations officially adopted 25 November
as its International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This is the second year that dozens of government, social service and
voluntary agencies as well as UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund
for Women) are working together to raise awareness of White Ribbon Day
and the week leading up to it. The Families Commission has ordered
400,000 ribbons and already 40 kilometres of white ribbon has been cut
to size.
Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge to not commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and children.
