An issue that I feel strongly about is the Americanisation of New Zealand’s youth. In this matter I’m talking about gangs, slang and general mannerisms. New Zealand has fought long and hard for its own identity, with non-nuclear policies, peacekeeping exercises and environmentally friendly stances being at the top of our list, thus I find that when particular sects of today’s youth seem to seek to act, dress and talk like the people they see on MTV it undermines many decades of our countries search for individualism. I’m not against people expressing themselves however they like, but when we have kids as young as 13 dressing, walking and doing their best to act like “Cripps”, “Bloods” and other USA gangs (which we as New Zealanders have no connection with), and the ends to which they partake in this, especially those of a violent manner, it truly disturbs me.
