An issue I feel strongly about:
I believe that all New Zealanders need to make a more unified commitment to impoverished nations overseas, as this is what we promised to do as a nation by committing to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) over 30 years ago. As part of the MDG, New Zealand promised to commit 0.7% of our GDP to overseas developmental assistance, however we currently only give around 0.23%. Other countries, such as Norway, are well above this value already giving 0.87% of their GDP in overseas assistance. A tiny shift in our lives of relative luxury in order to give, will shift the lives of many impoverished people past the line of suffering and death. We may not be able to completely eradicate poverty from the world, but we can eradicate poverty from the worlds of so many individuals. If we can do this without significant changes to our own lives, then what's the big hold up? We need to give more, and this needs to be done soon.
