South Auckland kid sits in Parliament by Lose Siaki
Youth Parliament 2007 involves 121 youth MPs from all over New Zealand.

One in particular is Mangere’s youth MP representative Richard
Aiolupotea who I had the pleasure of sitting down with and having more
of a laidback chat rather than a formal interview.
Richard hails from Mangere East Auckland and attends De La Salle
College where he has the role of Deputy Head Boy. He has a real passion
for politics and believes youth parliament is worthwhile “I feel youth
parliament has taught me a lot on how New Zealand is being governed”.
The current loan system and the views of justice according to youth in
New Zealand are Richard’s main focus that he would like to point out
while here.
On the topic of Labour or National, Richard expressed his thoughts with
a quick and humorous response “Labour, because I like the colour red
better than blue”. But on a serious note, Richard points out that he
likes Labour’s policies and believes that they are good for all of New
Zealand.
Representing Taito Phillip Field was an honour and a privilege for
Richard “Taito Phillip Field, I believe, is a true role model”.
Besides politics, government issues and current bills to debate over,
Richard has a very good social life. He is heavily involved in several
church functions and plays his part with school events. Richard is also
a family man “My family have supported me with whatever I decide to do
which is very encouraging”.
