Get your voice heard in your community

There are a bunch of ways you can participate in the decision making processes of councils and get your ideas to them from making a submission to speaking at public meetings.

BUT FIRST, here are some things you could do to start getting active about your council and your community.

FIND OUT WHAT YOUR COUNCIL DOES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

  • do they have a youth page or website?
  • do they have a youth council?
  • do they have youth policy or strategy?
  • what decisions are being made which will directly affect young people in your community?
  • how does the council find out what young people want in their community?
Check out this map of all local and regional councils around the country to help you find your local council.

FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR YOUTH COUNCIL

Does your council have a youth council?

If it does, you could find out:
  • when their next open meeting is and attend it
  • if there are any consultations they are doing with young people in your community and help out
  • when youth council elections or applications are made and become a youth councillor.
If it doesn’t, you could:
  • find out if the council is thinking about it and offer to help out
  • talk to other young people in your community about the idea of having a youth council
  • write a letter or speak to someone on the council about setting up a youth council.

GET YOUR VOICE HEARD BY THE DECISION MAKERS

You could:
  • make submissions on council decisions coming up
  • do a petition on something you are concerned and passionate about
  • speak at a Council meeting about youth needs in your community
  • contact a Councillor or Community Board member directly with your ideas and thoughts
  • be a part of the LTCCP process.
