Youth advisory group
Youth Advisory Group
The Activate Youth Advisory Group aims to keep the young people of Aotearoa informed and the public alerted to the voice of youth today.
We are Activate, a youth advisory group for the Ministry of Youth Development.
We are a Wellington based group and have been going since 2005.
Membership criteria
Our group is made up of 14 members from a range of background and walks
of life. We come from different cultures including Māori, Pakeha,
Pasifika and Somalian. We are all volunteers!
All members of the group went through a selection process that included
completing a task. For the task we had to list the youth perspective/s
and views we would bring to Activate (for example being a young parent,
being a New Zealander or relating it to our cultural background) and
why these views are important to have in Activate.
We also needed to:
- be aged between 15-21 years old
- not have undertaken any leadership roles within our school or
community such as being a member of a youth council or student council.
(However, the selection process took into consideration previous
experience on other groups and committees because it is important that
positions representing young people are shared amongst the youth
community)
- be able to work in a group with lots of different kinds of young people
- be open to and respectful of other young people’s cultures and identities
- be available for monthly meetings
- be involved for at least one year.

What we’ve been up to
We work on a range of projects that include presenting oral submissions
on bills that impact on young people and attending conferences to
provide a youth view point.
We have been involved in:
Submissions
Our latest submission was in May 2007 on the Young Offenders (Serious
Crimes) Bill. Click here to view our submissions to Parliament.
Postcard Campaign
Youth minimum wage was an important issue for young people. To make
sure young people’s voices were included in the government’s decision
we ran a national postcard campaign. Click here to see the results.
Presentations
One of our members attended a youth health conference in September 2007 to promote the benefits of youth participation.
