Central Government elections

What is the general election for?
The election is held to elect representatives for "electorates" or voting areas throughout the country, as well as to elect a political party, or group of parties, to become Government.

Who is eligible to vote?
You are eligible to vote in the general election if you are enrolled as a Parliamentary elector. To enrol you must:

  • be 18 years of age or older; and
  • be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident; and
  • have lived continuously in New Zealand for one year or more at some time.
If you are 17 years old, you can provisionally enrol. This means that you do the paper work now and when you turn 18, you’ll automatically be enrolled.

How do I enrol?
To enrol, you will need to complete an enrolment form. To get an enrolment form visit any PostShop or public library or call toll free 0800 36 76 56. Once you have completed your enrolment form, either leave it at any PostShop or post it in the envelope provided.

You can also get an enrolment form from the Elections website

This website has loads of information on elections and voting and you can also enrol online.

How do I vote?
Voting for the general election will be by ballot box. This means that on election day you will need to go to a polling place to cast your vote.

If you enrol a month or more before the election, you will be sent an information pack in the mail. This pack will contain voting information and an Easy Vote card. The EasyVote card will have your enrolment details printed on it. Take the card with you on election day – it will make voting easier.

And remember!
Enrolling is like your ticket to voting. Voting is really easy and it allows you to get involved and have your say about issues that affect your country and local community. So get moving and get on the roll now!
