Mud slide in Opotiki

The grand opening of a Mud Slide, funded by Ministry of Youth Development’s Youth Development Partnership Fund, was the high profile event of the Opotiki Coast Fun Unplugged Festival on 2 January 2007.

Through the Mud Slide project, young people in Opotiki have learnt about how to set up and run a business with the help of the business community and the Opotiki District Council.

The benefits to young people and to the Opotiki community have included:

  • training and employment skills for the young people in the area of business and tourism
  • the development of tourism and capacity building for the Opotiki District
  • a healthy active approach to fun and activities in a stunning natural environment
  • valuing of families through promoting learning, sharing having fun together.
Ministry of Youth Development Fund Project Manager, Stefan Weir, says that the Ministry appreciates the Opotiki District Council’s commitment to its young people by working with the young people of this community in putting forward such an innovative and positive project and by employing a local young person as the co-ordinator.
