Artmakers Community Artists Trust

Artmakers Community Artists Trust is a community organisation, established in the early 1980’s as an independent Charitable Trust. Their focus is on arts and creativity in its many forms. They have worked continuously in the community as facilitators of community arts projects and events, working in partnership with, amongst others, schools, health care facilities, social and community services groups, environment groups and the Hamilton City Council.

Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund supports Artmakers Community Artists Trust to deliver one programme. The programme is broken into modules which include: art, pottery, painting and bone carving.  Recently they have introduced digital story telling to the programme content.

Hamilton Skills Centre, Te Whare Arapuna, is a personal development, outdoor pursuits and leisure training centre based in Hamilton. The centre is an educational charitable trust and a registered private training establishment with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. A wide variety of adventure-based and experiential outdoor training and education courses are offered and contracted.

Courses and programmes conducted by the centre encourage young people to identify and work towards achieving their full potential in life, which include future education, training, leisure and employment options.

Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund supports Hamilton Skills Centre, Te Whare Arapuna to deliver three programmes.

The provider offers one New Zealand Conservation Corps programme which is delivered from their Hamilton base.  The programme has a conservation and outdoor focus to develop the confidence of the individuals.  Educational elements of the programme include health and wellbeing, budgeting, driver licence and first aid training.  One day a week is set aside for work experience opportunities, which is considered to be vital for participants to progress to employment, training or further education.

A separate programme is offered in Ngaruawahia.

This provider also delivers a Specialist Youth Service Corps programme from their main base.  The programme is targeted at those young people in the youth justice system and aims to help them remove the barriers that lead to positive outcomes.  Hamilton Skills Centre works closely with the police, health and other agencies in order to meet the broad needs of this group.

Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund supports Mangakino Community Agency to deliver one programme.

The Conservation Corps programme works with young people who are not engaged in formal education.  The aim is to develop confidence and skills and identify possible employment opportunities.  The programme aims to develop relevant skills to fit the local workforce needs.

Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund supports Tuwharetoa Ki Tongariro Outdoor Pursuits to deliver two programmes.

One programme is delivered in Turangi. The main focus of this programme is providing work opportunities in the conservation and tourism industry.  The provider works closely with the ski field operators and supports young people into work experience on the ski fields in the winter months. This has huge advantages for the participants as often they may gain permanent positions at the end of the season in catering or other services.

A second programme is delivered in Taupo. This programme has a strong conservation element to it.  Young people can learn about plants and their medicinal purposes.  This programme offers basic forestry skills, the outdoors is used to teach bush, tramping and camping skills, and building confidence and self esteem. 

The provider places emphasis on personal development including the importance of good health and well being, personal presentation, and general behaviour.

Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund supports Raukura Waikato Social Services to deliver one programme in Huntly.

The programme caters for young people not engaged in formal education.  The aim is to support young people and remove the barriers that restrict their participation in education, training or employment.  The programme has a strong community project focus and is balanced with outdoor experiences and life skills.

The Maniapoto Training Agency works towards improving the knowledge and skills of people who are committed to self improvement and career development and who are seeking the opportunity to receive quality and formally recognised training.

Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund supports Maniapoto Training Agency to deliver two programmes. One programme is based in Taumaranui and one in Te Kuiti.
The programmes respond to the needs of young people in each area not engaged in formal education. They offer two Youth Development  programmes. The programmes provide a good mix of elements in order to develop skills and confidence in young people.  They are able to gain their first aid certificate, driver licence and other NZQA unit standards that can contribute to future employment opportunities.


South Waikato YMCA

Their activities include OSCAR and holiday programmes, recreation and education courses.

Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund supports the South Waikato YMCA to deliver one New Zealand Conservation Corps programme. The conservation component is used to instil an understanding of work ethic. There are general life skills and confidence building activities including challenging outdoor adventure.
