Southland YMCA Education Ltd
Southland
YMCA Education Ltd is a charitable trust which was established in 1862.
Their core values are caring, respect, honesty and responsibility.
Through their programmes with people of all backgrounds, they try to
make a positive difference in people's lives and communities.
They offer a range of programmes and support to young people including:
- alternative education
- supportive bail programme
- recreation and education programmes.
Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes The
Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund supports
Southland YMCA Education to deliver two programmes. Both programmes are
delivered from the YMCA centre in Invercargill.
The YMCA offers a New Zealand Conservation Corps programme to local
young people. The conservation projects are varied and
challenging due to the environment where they are carried out.
Young people are offered workshops on health and well being, building
confidence and self esteem, personal grooming and work
preparation. Challenging recreation in the programme may include
climbing, caving and abseiling. Work experience is considered important
in order for young people to explore what they would like to do for a
career. Kapa haka and The Young New Zealander’s Challenge
(Bronze, Silver and Gold) are core activities within the programme.
The YMCA is also funded to deliver a Specialist Youth Service
Corps. They have core activities that include numeracy and
literacy skills. There is high emphasis on identifying the barriers to
achieving positive outcomes and the links to offending
behaviours. The programme includes challenging recreation and
community projects and work experience where this is appropriate.
The YMCA work closely with the local police youth aid and youth justice
network.

potential, be the best that they can be and teach them that they do
make a difference. The Malcam Trust has contributed over 200,000 hours
of work to Otago’s nature reserves, tracks, rivers and coastline,
allowing our young people to make a visible difference and learn
traditional community values.
Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund
supports the Malcam Trust to deliver three programmes. They deliver a
Youth Service Corps and a Conservation Corps programme from their
Dunedin base. These programmes undertake community projects or
conservation work in the local community.
There is strong emphasis on improving confidence and self esteem and on
how young people can personally present and groom themselves.
These skills are important for securing work experience. Health and
wellbeing, and fitness levels are also an important part of the
programmes. The Trust works closely with other youth services to ensure
that young people can access any relevant service they may need.
The third programme funded is a residential programme based in
Alexandra. This programme is a New Zealand Conservation Corps
programme with a high level of outdoor work involved. The
programme aims to improve confidence and self esteem, health and
