Detailed below are Ministry funded services operating in the East Coast area.
Tairawhiti Polytechnic
Tairawhiti
Polytechnic offers a range of programmes including business, computing,
tourism, trades, catering, social sciences, agriculture and Maori
Studies.
Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund
supports Tairawhiti Polytechnic to deliver one programme. Tairawhiti
Polytechnic has access to a wide range services and offer
literacy/numeracy as part of their programme. They also offer art,
pottery, work experience and a range of challenging outdoor activities.

Te Runanga O Turanganui A Kiwa
Te
Rūnanga o Tūranganui ā Kiwa was established as an Iwi Authority in 1986
to promote and support the Iwi of Tūranganui ā Kiwa being
Rongowhakaata, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri and Te Aitanga ā Māhaki however in
accordance with Tikanga ā Iwi they look after all within their rohe.
Tūranga Ararau is the Iwi Tertiary Education provider of Te Rūnanga o
Tūranganui ā Kiwa and, through a range of programmes and services,
provides and promotes the skills, knowledge and qualifications to
enable the Iwi and the wider community to manage and advance their
cultural and economic resources being the land, the forests, the sea
and, most importantly, the people.
Ministry of Youth Development Funded Programmes
The Ministry of Youth Development’s Services for Young People Fund
supports Te Rūnanga o Tūranganui ā Kiwa to deliver two programmes. One
is a New Zealand Conservation Corps programme that undertakes beach
restoration work and marae support work. The life skill component
includes health and well being, fitness training and introduction to
the Armed Services. Tikanga ā Iwi is a core part of the
programmes. Young people may staircase into other programmes
offered by Te Runanga O Turanganui A Kiwa.
The second programme is “Papataiohi” Specialist Youth Service Corps for
young people entering the youth justice system. The foundation of
the “Papataiohi” Specialist Youth Service Corps course content and
delivery is based on Tikanga ā Iwi. The programme works with
young people, whanau and other caregivers to support young people to
identify and remove the barriers that hinder their positive learning
opportunities and aims to improve future outcomes.
