UNCROC: Additional monitoring and reporting
As well as receiving five-yearly Government reports on UNCROC, the Committee on the Rights of the Child considers reports from the non-government sector and independent human rights bodies.
New Zealand’s Office of the Children’s Commissioner trains and informs
community and government agencies about rights and responds to
individual or systemic violations of children's rights.
One of the Commissioner’s statuory roles is to monitor New Zealand’s compliance with UNCROC.
The non-government sector also has the opportunity to report to the UN committee on a five-yearly basis.
In 2001 Action for Children and Youth Action Aotearoa, a coalition of
non-government advocates for children and young people, coordinated New
Zealand’s non-government report.
Other non-government organisations/Crown Entities that take an active interest in New Zealand's UNCROC compliance include:
- The Human Rights Commission
- Action for Children and Youth Aotearoa (ACYA)
- UNICEF (New Zealand)
- Save the Children (New Zealand)
- YouthLaw
