Kickstart PROVOKE tool kit (2006)

This tool kit is designed to be a teaching resource to support Year 7 and 8 students learning about the importance of youth participation.

KickstartProvoke.jpgThe Kickstart PROVOKE tool kit is being trialled in Auckland schools in 2006-2007.

Youth participation provides young people with meaningful opportunities to be involved in public decision making.

The aim of this resource is to strengthen the decision making, leadership and social inquiry skills of students and to help them have their voices heard about issues in their school, community and country.

What’s in the tool kit?
The tool kit is designed to develop student’s understanding and application of youth participation through three steps from a local to national level:

  • Tool sheet 1: Create positive change
  • at school
  • Tool sheet 2: Get youth needs heard in the community
  • Tool sheet 3: Present class opinions on national issues
  • Activities guide: Activities and questions to use with each tool sheet.
The idea is that you work through the three tool sheets in order, and use the activities guide throughout.

Tool sheet 1 aims at students undertaking a positive and meaningful youth participation experience.

Students should then reflect on their learning and apply it to the planning phase of Tool sheet 2. Lessons learnt from the school and community tool sheets will contribute to the final tool sheet activity relating to national issues.

Note: the tool sheets can be adapted to fit topics specific to your class’s work. For example, the skills taught in Tool sheet 1 about undertaking a presentation to school decision makers can be used to teach students about making a presentation to people in other positions of influence.
